Dateline: 26th March, 2009
Winter in Stratford The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced two productions for winter 2009 in the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford. From 21st October (previews from 15th) to 21st November, Gregory Doran will direct Richard Wilson as Malvolio, Nancy Carroll as Viola and Alexandra Gilbreath as Olivia in Twelfth Night. "I am delighted," Doran said, "to have finally persuaded Richard Wilson to play Malvolio, a part he was surely born to play. And its a real pleasure to welcome back Nancy Carroll to play Viola and Alexandra Gilbreath to play Olivia. Nancy and Alexandra appeared opposite each other as Rosalind and Celia in my production of As You Like It in 2000." Further casting will be announced later. Then from 15th December (previews from 5th) to 30th January, Dominic Cooke, currently artistic director at the Royal Court, returns to the RSC to direct his own adaptation of The Arabian Nights, which he originally created for the Young Vic in 1998. Cooke said, "For a long time Ive wanted to come back to Shahrazad and the 1001 nights and its a fantastic moment to come back to the RSC and re-conceive the work for the dynamic space of the Courtyard." This will be his first production in the theatre. The show, aimed at audiences of 7+, will have a cast of eighteen. No details of casting have yet been announced.
