RWCMD Launches Music Theatre MA

The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama has launched a new MA course in Musical Theatre. Subjecty to validation, this will be a twelve month course which will accept it first intake of students in January 2011.

The new programme has been specifically designed to meet industry demands for musical theatre practitioners who are strong in the interdependent disciplines of acting, singing and dance and builds on an excellent tradition of acting and vocal students graduating in to leading roles within the West End.

Only a small group of students will be recruited for this programme resulting in an intensive teaching environment that will enable students to develop and strengthen existing skills in acting, singing and dance.

Students will undertake extensive classes within each of these areas, with particular emphasis on character and relationship work. Individual tutorials will focus on singing technique and repertoire, specifically orientated to the expressive demands of musical theatre.

During training they will perform in a series of Showcase presentations to agents, casting directors and potential employers in Cardiff and London - The Royal Court Theatre.

The newly appointed Course Leader Vivien Care, a graduate of the college who is currently playing Sister Margaretta in The Sound of Music, says, "As one of only three Conservatoires that provide both music and drama training, the College provides a unique environment to study musical theatre with opportunities to perform in both intimate and large scale musical performances."

Full details of the course can be found at www.rwcmd.ac.uk/postgraduate_courses/acting/ma_musical_theatre.aspx.
