Summer Courses in Wales

The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama is holding a number of short courses and summer schools, open to anyone of 16 and older, at its Cardiff campus. Each course is led by a recognised expert in the field.

Drama Courses

Introduction to Theatre Directing
With Michael Bogdanov
July 23 - 24: duration 2 days
Cost: £150 + VAT
Topics include choosing a play, casting, the use of space, working with writers, physical theatre, developing a design, use of music.

Shakespeare
With Michael Bogdanov
July 13 - 18: duration: 6 Days
Cost: £300 + VAT
The course includes:
- how to read and/or teach Shakespeare
- Shakespeare in a multi-cultural society
- verse speaking
- story-telling
- acting Shakespeare – traditional or modern?
- Shakespeare the subversive or conservative
- directing Shakespeare - cutting, rewriting, modernizing, deconstructing
All ages are welcome, and no previous acting experience is necessary.

RWCMD Summer Acting school
with Greg Cullen and Dave Evans
July 27 – August 7: duration: 2 weeks
Cost: £750 + VAT
A two week course in acting techniques for aspiring actors of all ages and standards – an ideal foundation course for those thinking of attending drama school, but equally interesting for anyone interested in developing their acting skills.

Propel Acting Course
With Simon Trinder
August 24 - September 4 or September 7 - 18: duration: 2 weeks
Cost: £700 + VAT
Participants will work with a professional actor and choreographer (from the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Laban School of Contemporary Dance) for an intensive two week course. They will also work with a voice coach and on audition technique with a professional film, television and theatre casting director.
The areas covered include vocal technique, improvisation, Shakespeare, screen acting, devised work, movement, contemporary text work and audition technique.

The Essential Performance Space
Theatre Design with Jean-Guy Lecat
August 10 - 17
Duration: 8 days
Cost: £500 + VAT
World famous theatre designer and theatre architecture consultant Jean Guy Lecat runs a course for young professionals and students from a range of disciplines. The workshop explores the dynamics of the audience/performer relationship, the essential simplicity of design and the collaborative ethos.
