Thirty Years of the Royal Exchange The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester celebrates its 30th anniversary with an autumn and winter season that artistic director Braham Murray has described as one of its richest ever. The season begins in September with a new adaptation by Rona Munroe of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel Mary Barton. Associate artistic director Sarah Frankcom directs this story set in industrial Manchester in the 1840s. In October, associate artistic director Jacob Murray directs August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, starring Antonio Fargas - Huggy Bear from the 70s TV series Starsky and Hutch. The play tells the story of a recording session with blues legend Ma Rainey, her band members, and the white producer and agent who made themselves wealthy through Rainey's records. After playing the lead in Harvey at last Christmas, Ben Keaton returns to the theatre this coming Christmas and new year to star in an adaptation by Anthony Burgess of Cyrano de Bergerac, directed by Greg Hersov. The season ends in January and February 2007 with associate director Jo Combes's production of Noel Coward's The Vortex, a savage portrayal of the darker side of the cocktail scene of the legendary roaring twenties. The Studio season will include the British premiere of Things of Dry Hours by Naomi Wallace, and the first Royal Exchange co-production with the Young Vic with the premiere of Love and Money by Dennis Kelly, directed by local director Matthew Dunster.
