Dateline: 11th May, 2003 SAC in Danger The success of Labour and the Liberal Democrats in the recent elections to the Scottish Parliament could spell the end of the Scottish Arts Council. Both Labour and the Lib Dems, which will form the coalition which will govern Scotland, have concerns about SAC and are committed to, at the very least, a review of its role. The Lib Dems promised in their manifesto to review SAC's structure and consider whether future funding should come directly from the Scottish Executive, while Labour's manifesto suggests the possibility of a "single cultural agency for Scotland," which could well be the Parliament's culture ministry. Arts practitioners in both Scotland and Wales feel that they are less well funded than their English counterparts. In Wales a coalition of arts practitioners and Assembly members have forced, in recent years, a major reorganisation of the Arts Council of Wales, but in Scotland, although there is major concern at the level of funding, most practitioners feel that the Scottish Arts Council has done the best it can with the resources it has been given by government and blame politicians for the arts' ills. Both coalition parties support the setting up of a National Theatre of Scotland. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
