The Tobacco Factory, Bristol

Shakespeare Company at Risk

A Bristol-based theatre company set up six years ago and dedicated to producing Shakespeare is facing closure, their director has revealed.

Andrew Hilton, who founded Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory in 2000 at a converted warehouse said the current production of Love's Labours Lost could be their last after poor houses for the recent Titus Andronicus.

The company, which relies on box office receipts and donations, has established a national reputation for its work and two years ago transferredt productions of Macbeth and The Changeling to the Barbican.

A statement from the company said, "Like many theatre companies, particularly unfunded ones, we live on a knife edge.

"Our critically acclaimed production of Titus Andronicus played to very disappointingly small audiences. Our financial loss on the 6 week run was £30,000.

"As a result of this loss we may be unable to continue and SATTF's 7 year life will come to an abrupt end in a few weeks time. We have no source of public finding to bail us out. We are dependent on you, our audience, to decide whether we live or die.

"We are therefore appealing for your help.

"If 1000 of our supporters donate £25 each then our immediate future will be secure. (As we are a charity, that £25,000 could add up to £32,000 by the addition of Gift Aid, our only form of Government subsidy.)

To donate online click "Support US" then "Donate Now" (in the left hand menu) or send a cheque made payable to "SATTF" to Sophie Jerrold, SATTF, Raleigh Road, Bristol BS3 1TF."
