Jonathan Miller

Miller to Direct Hamlet in Bristol

Jonathan Miller is to direct Hamlet for Bristol's Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory in March next year. The production, which will feature Jamie Ballard as Hamlet, will be the second of the company's spring productions.

First will be The Taming of the Shrew, which will be directed by SATTF artistic director Andrew Hilton. Saskia Portway, who has appeared in ten SATTF roles, including Rosalind in As You Like It, Beatrice-Joanna in The Changeling and Desdemona in Othello, will play Katherina.

The Taming of the Shrew runs from 7th February to 15th March.

Hamlet will run from 20th March to 26th April. Jonathan Miller will be the first guest director in the company's history. A statement from the company said, "For any Shakespeare company its first production of Hamlet is a defining moment and we are delighted to welcome, as our first guest director, the internationally known opera and theatre director, Jonathan Miller, who will bring his own immense talents to the play for the third time in his career."

After appearing in Beyond the Fringe in 1960, Jonathan Miller has worked in television as both presenter and writer of arts and medical documentaries, been director of the National Theatre with Laurence Olivier, producer of the BBC’s great Shakespeare series, has directed opera for the ROH, the ENO and all over the world. However this will be only his second theatre production in England in recent years.

Jamie Ball;ard has seen before for SATTF as Thersites in Troilus & Cressida and Antonio in The Changeling. Now one of the most sought-after young actors in the country he returns to the Tobacco Factory after seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.
