Charles Blasts ITV at South Bank Show Awards Prince Charles has attacked ITV bosses for "abandoning" The South Bank Show in a video shown at the show awards presentation. "The programme remains without rival," he said. "I cannot say I am encouraged as mainstream television abandons such a unique and special commitment. "Civilisation needs all the help it can get," he went on, "more so today than ever before. But now it loses one of its greatest champions. It is a sad loss." He was joined in his criticism by Ian McKellen ("I don't know how it's happened or why it's happened and it shouldn't have happened"), Billy Connolly ("Without arts there is no joy, without arts programmes there's only reality television"), P D James (who described the proceedings as a "wake") and, most viciously, actor, writer and comedian Rob Brydon, who said, "Good riddance! Let's get rid of any bastion of culture and lie around in pig shit." The show's presenter, Melvyn Bragg, won the outstanding achievement award whilst the Donmar's A Streetcar Named Desire won best play, David Bintley's E=mc² won best dancxe and ENO's Peter Grimes best opera. Best comedy went to Armando Iannucci's The Thick of It and Fish Tank best film. The Breakthrough Award went to artist David Blandy.
