Following a phenomenal year for Scottish Ballet, including a second successful run of Artistic Director Ashley Page's critically acclaimed The Nutcracker ("Full of mettle and class", The Herald), and an award winning return to the Edinburgh International Festival after a hiatus of twenty years, the Company is delighted to present this year's highly anticipated festive production, Cinderella, sponsored by Bank of Scotland.

A sumptuous reworking of the well-loved tale, Cinderella is the second full-length ballet from Ashley Page since his arrival at Scottish Ballet. Cinderella boasts a distinct theatrical vision, with highly inventive choreography created especially on the Company, which Ashley describes as being "incredibly fit and dancing the best it has ever been, with real personalities, confidence and maturity". Featuring magical sets and dazzling costumes by world-renowned designer, Antony McDonald, this enchanting fairy tale is transported to 'Westwood meets Warhol' 18th century France, with a decadence that embodies Scottish Ballet's most glamorous production yet.

Cinderella is set to the rich and colourful Prokofiev score, perfectly contrasting the wonder and wit of the romantic fairy tale with elements that capture both the mischief and melancholy of the story. Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) is considered one of the great 20th century composers, having mastered a number of genres ranging from symphonies and concerti to opera and ballet. During his lifetime, his works were considered ultra-modern and inventive. Cinderella was composed between 1940 and 1944, book-ending Prokofiev's opera War and Peace.

Generously sponsored by Bank of Scotland, which has committed more than a quarter of a million pounds over the next two years in support of the production, Cinderella commemorates twenty-four years of successful partnership between the two companies. Bank of Scotland's investment will also enable Scottish Ballet's Education Department to work in collaboration with the main Company, giving primary school children in Social Inclusion Partnership areas in and around Aberdeen an introduction to Scottish Ballet's work.

"It's an excellent opportunity for children to experience and enjoy classical dance at an early age," says Sarah Mackie, Head of Sponsorship at Bank of Scotland. Children will also enjoy complimentary Cinderella tickets and transport to an exclusive Theatre Insight package at His Majesty's Theatre, courtesy of Bank of Scotland.
