SB Tours New Romeo and Juliet

This week Scottish Ballet premieres a new reinterpretation of Romeo and Juliet by Polish choreographer Krzysztof Pastor, danced to the Prokofiev score - played live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra and with special rearrangement by kind permission of the Prokofiev estate.

Created exclusively on the Company, this is the first full-length commission for an external choreographer under the Artistic Direction of Ashley Page, and marks the continuing relationship with Pastor following Scottish Ballet's much applauded performance of his lyrical work In Light and Shadow at the Edinburgh International Festival two years ago. Mixing contemporary dance and steeped in classical ballet technique, Pastor, Dutch National Ballet’s resident choreographer, translates Shakespeare’s most famous tale for a dance audience with the support of esteemed Dramaturge Willem Bruls.

Set in twentieth century Italy, the story is intertwined with projected footage and features designs washed in striking black and white through to sepia concluding with the introduction of imposing colour strands.

Romeo and Juliet opens at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre, running from 13th to 17th May, before touring to His Majesty's, Aberdeen (21- Sat 24 May), Eden Court, Inverness (28 – Sat 31 May) and the Theatre Royal, Glasgow (4-7 June).
