The Tramway, Glasgow
Tramway Architects Chosen

Following an international competitive selection process, Scottish Ballet has announced that Malcolm Fraser Architects have been appointed to develop plans for the company's proposed new home at Tramway in Glasgow.

Malcolm Fraser Architects have extensive experience in delivering high quality arts buildings, most notably the award-winning Dance Base, National Centre for Dance, in Edinburgh and the recently completed Dance City building in Newcastle upon Tyne.

The project, which was awarded Scottish Arts Council funding to develop plans earlier this year, is expected to cost around £9 million and is being developed in partnership with Glasgow City Council. Work is due to commence on-site in 2006, with completion in mid 2008.

Initial plans outlined in 2003 have developed significantly, and the Company now has a scheme that will enhance Tramway without compromising the existing arts spaces. This plan will transform unused spaces at Tramway into studio, workshop, education and office spaces for Scottish Ballet, allowing the Company to continue its artistic success, as well as providing a range of state-of-the-art facilities, including much needed rehearsal space for independent professional dance artists and companies. The project will also benefit the local community by increasing the level of education and outreach activity the company can undertake, and place Scottish Ballet at the heart of a dynamic international performing and visual arts centre.

Scottish Ballet bought and moved into its current premises in 1979, a converted Territorial Army building based at 261 West Princes Street, Glasgow. Due to its lack of modern amenities, shortage of quality rehearsal space and the current state of the building there have been limits placed on how the Company can develop both artistically and physically. The forthcoming move will address these issues and allow additional, enhanced space for the Company in terms of office and sufficient studio space.
