Dateline: 6th April, 2005 New Scottish Theatre Network Launches The Scottish European Alternative Theatre Network is launched at Tramway, Glasgow, on Friday 15th April at 12.00pm The launch heralds a new development in Scottish Theatre, with the creation of an organisation which brings theatre practitioners and companies together to communicate ideas which are vital, exciting and timely. The Network includes individual theatre artists and administrators, and representatives from theatre companies such as Collusion Theatre and organisations such as RSAMD. The network has associates in countries including Belgium, Holland, Poland and Germany. The Network helps build bridges between Scottish theatre practitioners and companies and their European counterparts. A shared vision and shared beliefs are central to the Network's formation. The Network supports a holistic approach to theatre. For instance, it seeks to advance the understanding and appreciation of youth, community, education and outreach work. SEATN views such activity as cultural rather than social, and that the level of professional skill and ability required to deliver such work is significant and should be seen in the context of theatre as a whole. Keiran Gillespie, chair of SEATN, says, "SEATN represents a shared vision and highlights a real desire to work together. Our discussions and ideas have been stimulating and enriching, and the Network has the potential to make a contribution to the development of theatre in Scotland." During March 2005 Keiran has been working in Poland and Germany, and attending the International Festival of Community based theatre in Rotterdam. There will be an opportunity to discuss the ideas behind the launch with Keiran, Vice Chair Phyllis Steel and other members of the Network. Paul Biot, founding director of The Theatre Action movement in Belgium will also attend to highlight the Network's European dimension. Paul Biot says of the launch, "SEATN is an exciting development and we look forward to creating new work and partnerships." Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
