SOLT Gives Young Audience Grant The Society of London Theatre (SOLT) is giving Mousetrap Theatre Projects a £450,000 grant over three years to fund the charitys development of younger theatre audiences, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The funding, provided from SOLTs charitable subsidiary, the Theatre Development Trust, is to enable Mousetrap Theatre Projects to expand its programme of subsidised theatregoing for young people under 19 and to develop a new scheme to encourage 19-22 year olds to visit the theatre. Richard Pulford, Chief Executive of The Society of London Theatre, commented, The Societys Board has chosen to build on a resource that already exists rather than to invest in a programme of its own. This will enable the maximum possible benefit to accrue to the young people concerned and minimise the amount spent on administration. Mousetrap Theatre Projects was founded in 1997 as The Mousetrap Foundation by Sir Stephen Waley-Cohen, producer of Londons longest-running show, The Mousetrap, to help give Londons young people access to theatre in the capital. In the last ten years three-quarters of Londons state secondary schools have participated in the charitys programmes, and some 50,000 disadvantaged young people have attended top London shows on a ticket priced from £3-£5. We are thrilled to receive this generous support from the theatre industry as we approach our tenth anniversary, said Susan Whiddington, Director of Mousetrap Theatre Projects. SOLTs funding recognises the importance of education and access work in making Londons outstanding theatre accessible to all. This grant will give many more young people, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, the chance to attend the best of London theatre. In May this year Mousetrap Theatre Projects begins a year-long celebration of its tenth anniversary, launched by a free matinee performance of Billy Elliot for schoolchildren on 1st May.
