Dateline: 31st October, 2003 Sell Off Theatre Royal, Equity Tells Scottish Opera Scottish Opera should sell off the Theatre Royal, Glasgow, rather than make staffing cuts, Scottish Equity has said in a letter to the chair of the financially-ailing company. Currently the company has debts approaching £3m whilst the Theatre Royal's value is thought to be around £5m, but it is believed to be losing several hundreds of thourand pounds a year. Equity's Scottish secretary Lorne Boswell called the theatre "the most expensive rehearsal room in Europe" and he says that the union will strenuously resist any attempts to sack staff, whether orchestra, chorus or technicians. The Scottish Executive, in the person of culture minister Frank McAveety, has refused the company's request for an additional £1.5m over and above its annual grant of £7.5m.
