Scottish Opera's Five:15

Scottish Opera has announced the line-up for their Five:15 programme, announced in April, in which they paired five writers with five composers to write fifteen minute operas for performances in February and March in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The five teams and their operas are:

Dream Angus
Music by Stephen Deazley and words by Alexander McCall Smith and Ben Twist
The story is based on the oldest Celtic deity, Angus, and focuses on the character of Angus and his impact on those around him.

Gesualdo
Music by Craig Armstrong and words by Ian Rankin
Their opera tells the story of composer Carlo Gesualdo, who murdered his wife, Donna Maria d'Avalos, and her lover the Duke of Andria.

The King's Conjecture
Music by Gareth Williams and words by Bernard MacLaverty
Set in medieval Scotland at the Court of King James IV, it tells the story of an experiment carried out by the king about the nature and source of language - and how religious beliefs can turn out to be just superstition.

Queens of Govan
Music by Nigel Osborne and Wajahat Khan and words by Suhayl Saadi
A young Asian girl running through the streets of Govan on a rainy Saturday night, late for her job at a kebab shop, pursued by images and realities from her parallel lives, in the green valleys of Kashmir and the dark waters of the Clyde.

The Perfect Woman
Music by Lyell Cresswell and words by Ron Butlin
A renowned scientist has invited colleagues and members of the press to observe "a miracle of science", the creation of the perfect woman.

The operas will be performed at Òran Mòr, Glasgow, on 29th February and 1st and 2nd March, and the Hub, Edinburgh, on 8th and 9th March.

Audience reaction will decide which, if any, of the five will be expanded to a full-length piece.
