Dateline: 8th October, 2004 SO to Go South of the Border Scottish Opera is to try to set up an English tour to keep going during the 2005-2006 season. Under the restructuring plans for the cash-strapped company, it is supposed to cease all major productions for nine months from June of 2005 but, at a special fund-raising gala performance last month, music director Sir Richard Armstrong said "It cannot be allowed to happen" and yesterday a spokesman announced, "Scottish Opera has been exploring many ways of raising money in order to reduce the dark period. This has included the possibility of winning funds to tour south of the Border." According to ACE, which is the major funder of cross-border tours, no application for funding has been received from Scottish Opera but, according to The Scotsman, SAC has been in discussions with ACE about the possibility. The cost of staging a new opera at the SO's Glasgow theatre is around £400,000. The gala performance last month, for which tickets were £150, would have raised around £255,000 and a raffle by supporters has raised an additional £20,000.
