Sondheim Revue to Close Early

Side by Side by Sondheim, a celebration of the works of Stephen Sondheim (The Venue, off Leicester Square) will close on 23rd June, three weeks before its closing date of 14th July. Despite rave reviews the musical has, like so many other West End shows in the last couple of months, struggled to fill the house each week since it opened on 1st May. When it closes the show will have played 66 performances.

Side by Side is being produced by Neil Laidlaw for NML Productions and Melanie Herman.

"Melanie and I are very disappointed that we have to close the show early as we are both enormously proud of the production. Despite the great reviews, we just have not been able to pull in the audiences we had hoped for and do seem to be a casualty of a generally very quiet May in the West End, " said Neil Laidlaw. "We are however in talks to tour the production around the UK in the spring of next year, and looking at various different international dates including the US."

First seen in London in 1976, Side by Side features some of Sondheim's best known works, including collaborations with Leonard Bernstein, Richard Rodgers, Mary Rodgers and Jule Styne from classic musicals such as West Side Story, Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, Pacific Overtures and A Little Night Music.

With original narration written by Ned Sherrin , this production is directed by Hannah Chissick (former Artistic Director of Harrogate Theatre), with musical staging by Adam Cooper (most famous for his work with Matthew Bourne , The Royal Ballet and recently in the West End starring in the Donmar's production of Guys and Dolls at the Piccadilly Theatre). The cast is Alasdair Harvey, Abbie Osman and Josie Walker. The show has been performed by a cast of rotating narrators, including Les Dennis, Christopher Cazenove, Barry Cryer and Angela Rippon.
