Lear in the Primary School

TAG Theatre Company are bringing Shakespeare to primary 6 and 7 children across Scotland this autumn as they tour primary schools with a whole day of participatory activity inspired by King Lear.

In a dynamic and interactive day, pupils from the ages of 9-11 years will get the chance to work with professional actors as they explore the world of Shakespeare’s play. TAG’s actors will lead the children in workshops to uncover the characters, plot and language which make up King Lear.

The children will be given roles to play and ways of actively participating in the afternoon’s promenade performance. This one hour adaptation by award winning writer and adaptor Peter Arnott will use the original text interspersed with contemporary narration.

TAG pioneered this full day format of workshops and performance, in 1999, when they brought a similar project inspired by Julius Caesar to primary school children. The intention is to introduce Shakespeare by creating a truly unforgettable experience for the young audience.

One teacher whose pupils saw King Lear in its first week of tour commented, “I have been lucky enough today to observe the TAG theatre company in action in Anderson's Primary School. We had a fantastic day which culminated in the most wonderful school theatre production I have ever seen (I've been teaching for over 20years). The children had a brilliant time and as for me, well I have never been to a Shakespeare play before and I found it such a powerful experience that I will definitely make a point of going to one in the future." (Teacher, Anderson's Primary School, Forres)

Andrew Burt’s dramatic design for King Lear will envelope the entire school hall playing area in a silken canopy covering set and participants - creating a memorable environment in which the children can explore imaginatively.

Using their experience and expertise in bringing theatre and education to children, TAG is looking forward to bringing Shakespeare’s rich world to life. This performance will use four actors in a simplified version of the play and will be directed by Guy Hollands.

The tour opened on 4th October and runs until 12th November.
