Knives in Hens publicity image

TAG to Tour Harrower Debut Play

In February and March 2005 TAG will tour David Harrower's Knives in Hens. Widely thought to be the best known and, worldwide, the most frequently performed Scottish play for a generation, it was David Harrower’s now legendary debut as a playwright. Yet despite international acclaim, this drama has rarely been seen in Scotland since its Edinburgh premiere ten years ago (with only one other professional outing).

TAG is delighted to be able to bring this play to eighteen venues ranging in scale from The Traverse in Edinburgh to small rural community venues. TAG’s tour commences on 3rd February at the Tron Theatre, Glasgow, before setting off around the country, taking Harrower’s modern classic to audiences from the north east and across the central belt to Dumfries and the Borders.

TAG’s strong cast of three provide contrasting physicality and personas for Harrower’s dark vision. Rosalind Sydney works with TAG again following on from success as Cordelia and The Fool in the company’s King Lear which toured primary schools last year (and featured in BBC Artworks). Successful Scottish actor of Theatre, TV and Film John Kazek joins the company fresh from filming Batman Begins with a host of Hollywood stars, and rising star Sam Heughan works with TAG for the first time. Nominated as most promising newcomer in the 2003 Lawrence Olivier Awards, he completes the line-up for this forceful play.

Set in a harsh and unforgiving rural landscape, Knives in Hens is a story of lust, betrayal and murder. It tells of a young woman, trapped by marriage in a closed and superstitious community, who develops an intense relationship with the reviled village miller.

Darkly erotic visions and powerfully lyrical language combine to make Knives in Hens a seductive tale of solitude, sexuality and awakening.

The play will be directed by TAG’s Artistic Director Guy Hollands, whose last theatre tour with TAG was Pinter’s The Birthday Party which toured Scotland in autumn 2003. The set and costumes will be created by award-winning designer Neil Warmington. This production is supported by an in-depth and extensive programme of education work and teachers’ resources.
