2005 TMA Awards Nominees

The nominees for the 2005 TMA (Theatrical Management Association) Awards (formerly the Barclay's Theatre Awards) have been announced:

Best Performance in a Play
Josette Bushell-Mingo for Antony and Cleopatra (Royal Exchange Theatre Company);
Tony Cownie for A Madman Sings to the Moon (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh);
Ian McDiarmid for Lear (Sheffield Crucible).

Best Supporting Performance in a Play
Jimmy Akingbola for Blue/Orange (Sheffield Crucible);
Steven McNicoll for Look Back in Anger (Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh);
Tamzin Outhwaite for Breathing Corpses (Royal Court Theatre Upstairs).

Best Performance in a Musical
Anna-Jane Casey for Mack and Mabel (Watermill, Newbury);
Joe McFadden for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Chichester Festival Theatre);
Annette McLaughlin for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Chichester Festival Theatre).

Best Supporting Performance in a Musical
Tracie Bennett for Sex, Chips and Rock 'n' Roll (Manchester Royal Exchange);
James Bolam for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Chichester Festival Theatre);
Beverly Klein for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Chichester Festival Theatre).

Best Director
Michael Grandage for Don Carlos (Sheffield Crucible);
Edward Hall for The Winter's Tale (Watermill, Newbury and on tour);
Jonathan Kent for Lear (Sheffield Crucible).

Best Touring Production
Rain (Cirque Éloize);
The Bacchae (Kneehigh Theatre with West Yorkshire Playhouse, Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, Bristol Old Vic and Hall for Cornwall);
Home (Oxford Stage Company).

Best Musical
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (Chichester Festival Theatre);
Mack and Mabel (Watermill, Newbury);
Sex, Chips and Rock 'n' Roll (Manchester Royal Exchange).

Best New Play
Bashment by Rikki Beadle–Blair (Theatre Royal, Stratford East);
Pyrenees by David Greig (Tron Theatre Company and Paines Plough in association with Watford Palace;
Talking to Terrorists by Robin Soans (Out of Joint and the Royal Court) on tour.

Best Design
David Copperfield (Simon Higlett) at West Yorkshire Playhouse;
Faustus (Laura Hopkins) at Northampton Theatre Royal;
Insignificance (Tom Piper) at Sheffield Lyceum.

Equity Award for the Best Show for Children and Young People
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Bristol Old Vic);
Little Sweet Thing (on tour);
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (West Yorkshire Playhouse).

Achievement in Opera
Giulio Cesare at Glyndebourne;
Scottish Opera for a courageous season;
the partnership of Vladimir Jurowski and Richard Jones for Welsh National Opera’s Wozzeck.

Achievement in Dance
Birmingham Royal Ballet for a stimulating range of programming throughout the year, particularly on its split tours;
Mark Baldwin for the creation of Constant Speed and the high calibre of his artistic directorship of Rambert Dance Company;
Matthew Bourne for his touring work and the impact it has had on public expectations of dance nationwide.

The winners will be announced on Sunday 23rd October at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Theatre in a ceremony hosted by Nichola McAuliffe.

The TMA Awards are for theatre outside of the West End (although many of the productions may well have a West End run). The panel of 150 judges from all over the UK (all volunteers) began their work on 1st September 2004 and concluded on 31st August 2005, seeing over a thouand productions in that time.
