The Thetare Museum in Covent Garden

Theatre Museum/ROH Link-Up?

According to a report in The Stage, the Royal Opera House is exploring the possibility of making joint use of the Theatre Museum premises with the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Thetare Museum's parent company.

“We’ve got a couple of months before the V&A’s next board meeting to explore whether together we could put on an exciting programme there. As a neighbour with an interest in ballet and theatre, which uses this resource a lot anyway – for example for our designs for Sleeping Beauty – we have a lot of cross-working going on already. We want to look at whether we can do something that would really lift the place. If it closed I think that would be very, very sad,” the ROH chief executive Tony Hall told the newspaper.

As we reported on 26th March, the museum's trustees were considering two possibilities, one of which was a joint venuture with a then-unnamed other organisation. The alternative, which has raised protests from across the theatre world, was to transfer the museum and its contents to the V&A in South Kensington.

The museum's trustees will meet to make their decision on 18th May.
