The Theatre Museum

Theatre Museum Future Still Unsure

The future of the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden is still uncertain after Thursday's meeting of its Board of Trustees. The trustees will now discuss two options at their next meeting on 18th May. They are:

  1. Moving the collections and activities to the V&A in South Kensington, and retaining the archives at Blythe House;
  2. Partnering with another (unnamed) organisation which may be interested in using the Theatre Museum’s current site, allowing the museum to continue to stage displays and educational activities in Covent Garden.

Mark Jones, the director of the V&A, said, "We understand the concern within the theatrical world over the future of the Theatre Museum and are considering several options to ensure that the collections remain as widely seen and used as possible."

Earlier in the week, The Times published a letter from a large number of theatre practitioners protesting that the future of the Mueum is to be decided “without adequate consultation with either museum users or theatre practitioners.” Signatories of the letter included Diana Rigg, Judi Dench, Corin, Jemma, Lynn and Vanessa Redgrave, Natasha and Joely Richardson, Kika Markham, Martin Jarvis, Patrick Malahide, Alex Kingston, Peter Bowles and Peter Hall.

The president of the Society of London Theatre (which has contributed a substantial amount of money to the current exhibition, A Great Night Out: The Making Of The West End), Rosemary Squire, has also written to the Trustees, pointing out that the society would not "expect an attempt to run the (educational) programme out of South Kensington to have anything like the same attraction for young people interested in theatre, for whom the West End setting is much more appealing.”
