Dateline: 30th October, 2008
Spring in Newcastle Newcastle's Theatre Royal has announced its spring 2009 season. Foremost is Sean Matthias' new production of Waiting for Godot, starring Ian KcLellen and Patrick Stewart, which will run from 20th to Sat 25th April. Other highlights at the theatre include a brand new musical based on the life of the one of the worlds greatest entertainers, Al Jolson, in, Jolson & Co The Musical (Tues 14 Sat 18 Apr), Britains premiere dance company, Rambert Dance Company (Wed 25 Fri 27 Mar) and, from the National Theatre, David Hares new play, Gethsemane (Tue 10 Sat 14 Mar) starring Olivier award winning actress Tamsin Greig. John Wilsons wartime drama For King & Country plays from 17th to 21st March) and, following a hugely successful London season, Kneehigh Theatre Companys production of Brief Encounter will run from 12th to 16th May. Northern Opera returns with the world premiere of a new work by David Sawer and Armando Iannucci, Skin Deep (4th March) alongside classics such as Puccinis Tosca. Already announced is Stephen Daldy's multi-award winning An Inspector Calls (31st March 4th April). Following the successful stage version of Kensukes Kingdom, the Birmingham Stage Company brings to life another of Michael Morpurgos popular tales, Why The Whales Came (Tue 28 Apr Sat 2 May). Another family event in the spring season is Judith Kerrs modern classic The Tiger Who Came To Tea (Wed 15 Sat 18 Apr). The doorbell rings just as Sophie and her mummy are sitting down to tea. Who could it possible be? This celebration of Abba Dancing Queen (Tue 5 Sat 9 May) also features music from Saturday Night Fever and Grease as well as more disco hits from the 70s. Also in the season are one-night stands by Pam Ayres, Clive Webb and Danny Adams, Fascinating Aida, Ed Byrne and Derren Brown. Tiockets for the season go on sale on 8th November.
