£400,000 Donation for Newcastle

The Northern Rock Foundation has announced a £400,000 donation to the new Education Centre development at Theatre Royal, Newcastle, bringing the Foundation's total investment to £800,000.

The Theatre Royal's redevelopment of the former Barclays Bank building on Market Street represents the largest expansion in its 170 year history. Alongside the new Education Centre, the theatre will also house a new Booking Hall and Bistro.

The Education Centre will take the form of a 110m² Studio Theatre on the first floor of the building and will facilitate one of the most extensive education programmes of any UK theatre. The programme will focus on schools in less privileged areas of the region.

Fiona Ellis, Director of Northern Rock Foundation, is confident the development will provide an important educational resource for local schools in the region and further establish the North East as a hotbed of cultural growth.

"The Education Centre is an exciting development that will engage young people - the audiences of the future - in theatre. This, and our previous investment, will result in wonderful developments at the Theatre Royal, which is such an important part of the region's cultural landscape."

To date £4.5m has been raised for the £5.2m development and plans are now being made by the Theatre Royal Development office to find the outstanding £750,000. National charitable trusts as well as regional charitable trusts, companies and individuals are among the funders of the project.

"The theatre is immensely grateful to the Northern Rock Foundation for this support. It is an exceptionally generous donation and puts us on course to complete the funding package for the project," said Richard Berg Rust, director of development at the Theatre Royal.

"The new Education Centre will play a major role in educating young people about arts and culture and allowing them to experience first hand life inside one of the country's most successful theatres.

"A lot of people in the region have huge affection for this great theatre and now there is a fantastic opportunity for them to support it and get involved in one of the most exciting education projects in the country."
