Clearer ACE Strategy Needed, Says Theatres Trust

The Theatres Trust has called for a clearer strategy to secure theatres at risk from loss of ACE funding. It is concerned that there needs to be a clearer strategy in place to manage the impact of the loss of around £3.8m public sector investment in 22 theatres and performing arts venues across the UK.

The Trust welcomed revised decisions to retain £2.3m for theatres threatened by the cuts, including the Bush in London and Northcott Theatre in Exeter, and was pleased that increased investment would be made in new and existing theatres including the Roundhouse and the Hackney Empire in London and the PAC in Leicester. It was also pleased that ACE South West will earmark capital funds for Bristol Theatre Royal and that ACE East Midlands has ring-fenced funds for produced theatre in Derby.

However The Trust pointed out that, of the 25 theatres placed at risk by the proposed cuts, only three have seen their funding increase and four have had much reduced offers.

Mhora Samuel, Director, said, "We acknowledge absolutely that ACE has a role to invest public funds in the arts in response to changing needs. However we would like to see clearer strategies emerge to ensure that the organisations and the buildings affected by these cuts are not placed at risk. Our priority now will be to work with Arts Council England, local authorities and the theatres to ensure we do not lose these valuable buildings."
