Theatre World Awards

Three British actors have been given Theatre World Awards in New York. These awards, which began in 1945, are given to actors making the biggest impression in their first (or first major) appearance on the New York stage. There are twelve awards given annually, six to men and six to women.

The three British performers who received awards for the 2006-2007 season are Eve Best for A Moon for the Misbegotten, Gavin Lee for Mary Poppins and Bill Nighy for The Vertical Hour.

Previous winners include Maria Friedman for The Woman in White, Richard Griffiths for The History Boys and Ian McDiarmid for Faith Healer (2005-2006), and Richard Burton, Geraldine Page, Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Victor Spinetti, Peter Firth, Jonathan Pryce, Suzanne Bertish, Cleo Laine, Colm Wilkinson, Frances Ruffelle, Joanne Whalley-Kilmer; Pauline Collins, Brenda Blethyn, Tracey Ullman, Michael Cerveris, Ralph Fiennes, Helen Mirren, Jude Law, Rufus Sewell, Janet McTeer, Fiona Shaw, Antony Sher, Alan Cumming, Eddie Izzard, Brendan Coyle, Anna Friel, Rupert Graves, Stephen Dillane, Jennifer Ehle, Hayley Mills, Barry Humphries, Emma Fielding, Adam Godley, David Warner, Jonathan Cake, Victoria Hamilton and Clare Higgins.
