Non-Professional Is the Voice of Musical Theatre For the first time this year non-professionals were allowed to take part in the BBC Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre competition, held as part of the International Festival of Music Theatre in Cardiff, and one of the non-professional entries, 19-year old Aimie Atkinson from Stevenage, won. Michael Ball, one of the judges, commented, "I really think we witnessed the birth of a star. I thought she was extraordinary." She competed alongside thousands of non-professional singers and performers from across the UK during a UK wide series of auditions by BBC New Talent earlier this summer and was one of fifteen people to be selected to have the opportunity to work alongside top industry professionals in a three-day boot camp. Then she won a place in the preliminary round of the Voice of Musical Theatre competition, then progressed through the semi finals to the final, where she competed against Helena Blackman, Lucy Durak, Christian Jon Billet, Gemma ODuffy and Gabriel Vick. The judges were Jae Alexander, Michael Ball, Elaine Paige and Julia McKenzie, BBC Radio 2 head of live music Lewis Carnie and vocal coach Annie Skates. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
