Writers' Guild Awards 2008

The Writers’ Guild Awards 2008 were presented on last week at a ceremony at BAFTA. Hosted by Jeremy Hardy, the awards celebrated the critical acclaim and commercial success of screenwriters, playwrights, authors and videogame writers in the past year.

It was a particularly good night for women writers, as female-penned projects won awards in several major categories. Among the winners were Heidi Thomas for Best TV Drama Series (Cranford),Gwyneth Hughes for Best TV Short Form Drama (Miss Austen Regrets), Kate Clanchy for Best Book (What Is She Doing Here?), Lucinda Coxon for Best Play (Happy Now?) and Rhianna Pratchettfor Best Video Game Script (Overlord). Ruth Jones and her writing partner James Corden shared the award for Best TV Comedy / Light Entertainment (Gavin and Stacey, Series 2).

Winners in other categories included Chris Harrald for Best Radio Play (Mr Larkin's Awkward Day), Ronald Harwood for Best Screenplay (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), Sanjeev Kohli and Donald McLeary for Best Radio Comedy / Light Entertainment (Fags, Mags and Bags), Mike Kenny for Best Play for Children and Young People (Electric Darkness) and Tony Collingwood for his Outstanding Contribution to Children’s Writing. The Bill saw off strong competition from Holby City and Hollyoaks to win Best Continuing Drama Series.

Rick Wakeman presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to David Croft and Jimmy Perry, the duo who created classic British sitcoms such as Dads’ Army, You Rang M’Lord, Hi de Hi and It Ain’t Half Hot Mum. Wakeman, a renowned musician and songwriter, is a huge fan of Croft and Perry’s work and said he was also lucky enough to have become close friends with both writers in recent years. Other presenters on the night included James Fox, Leslie Phillips, Rita Tushingham, Timothy West and Floella Benjamin.

The Writers’ Guild Awards are organised and run by writers, for writers. They are a unique celebration of British writing talent: shortlists and winners are chosen by the Guild’s Craft Committees or by an appropriate jury appointed by the Guild’s Executive Council.
