All Is Not Well at WMC

Audiences at Cardiff's Wales Millennium Centre have been very disappointing, according to an article in The Times. The Centre needs to sell 70-75% of tickets to break even but houses have been around 40% or less. Some shows, the paper says, sold only 12%.

A number of performances have had to be cancelled because of poor ticket sales, ranging from Cirque Eloize's Rain to Pip Utton's Adolf.

High seat prices have been blamed by some for the problems. One member of staff, writing on the Theatre in Wales forum, said in February that she had to work a four hour shift at the WMC to be able to afford to see one of the shows. Others, according to the Times' article, blame the management style of chief executive Judith Isherwood: one board member said her management style created a "culture of fear" and another source said he found her "dictatorial". Isherwood told the paper that she dispuited claims about her management style which she described as "tough" but "consultative".

One ex-member of staff started legal action but settled before the case came to court, another is currently taking legal advice, the director of business development resigned claiming that her position was untenable and her successor left soon after being appointed. Isherwood's PA also left after a dispute over expenses claims.
