WMC Opens The Wales Millennium Centre (Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru) on the Cardiff Bay waterfront opened today with a gala concert celebrating five greats of Welsh performance: singers Dame Shirley Bassey and Dame Gwyneth Jones, actors Sian Phillips and the late Richard Burton, and composer Alun Hoddinott. Appearing in the show were Sir Ian McKellen, Derek Jacobi, Michael Ball, Jonathan Pryce, Matthew Rhys, Nana Mouskouri, Robert Hardy, Ruth Madoc, the Welsh National Opera Chorus, the Urdd Choir, and the Diversions Dance Company (the national dance company of Wales). The 1,900-strong audience was welcomed by Welsh opera star Bryn Terfel but at the start of the second half the saftey curtain stuck, causing a 25 minute delay which the audience filled by singing Welsh hymns. The Centre, which cost £106m, will host a Royal Gala on Sunday, in the presence of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles the Prince of Wales, at which Bryn Terfel will be among the performers. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
