Ivor Novello
Shan Cothi
Rhys Meirion

WMC Goes to San Francisco

Following the success of Ivor Novello's Glamorous Night, co-produced by Wales Millennium Centre and Emmy Award winning music director George Daugherty last November, the production is now travelling to San Francisco with its Welsh stars for a one-off concert.

Welsh soprano and Con Passionate star Shan Cothi along with Welsh tenor Rhys Meirion will be performing at this very prestigious occasion in aid of the Kidney Foundation of Northern California at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco on Saturday 25 February.

Wales Millennium Centre's Chief Executive Judith Isherwood explains, "One of our ambitions is to take the very best of Wales to the world by producing and presenting our own shows. The Ivor Novello concert, in conjunction with George Daugherty, an authority on the works of Cardiff-born Novello, worked extremely well. The fact that we are now exporting it across the Atlantic demonstrates that we have the ability to produce and present the best productions from Wales to the world."

She adds, "There is also a strong possibility that the concert will be going to the West End after visiting San Francisco, which again is good for the Centre and good for Wales."

The evening will celebrate the legendary Welsh composer, playwright, actor and songwriter, Ivor Novello, who shot to fame overnight with his 1914 song Keep the Home Fires Burning.

Glamorous Night will feature sopranos Marilyn Hill Smith and Shan Cothi, along with tenors Rhys Meirion and Tyley Ross. They will be accompanied by Sinfonia Britannia and its music director George Daugherty.

As well as writing his own plays including The Rat in 1924, followed by Symphony in Two Flats, The Truth Game and Proscenium, Novello, born in Cardiff in 1893, was a major film star appearing in British, American, French and German films.

The evening will showcase Novello's greatest hits including Glamorous Night, Waltz Of My Heart, On Such A Night As This, I Can Give You The Starlight, When The Gypsy Played, Some Day My Heart Will Awake, We'll Gather Lilacs and, of course, Keep The Home Fires Burning.
