The Wales Millennium Centre
Tesco to Sponsor WMC

Supermarket giant Tesco is to sponsor Cardiff's Wales Millennium Centre for at least one year, with the option to extend for a further two. It will fund the Foyer stage, thus allowing the 250,000 annual visitors to enjoy free performances seven days a week.

Enfys Fox, Tesco’s Marketing Manager in Wales said, “We are delighted to be sponsoring Wales Millennium Centre for at least the next year. We hope that the Tesco Stage will be a success and that more and more people will enjoy the fabulous programme that the centre offers.”

The sponsorship announcement comes as the Centre celebrates its first birthday. Chief Executive Judith Isherwood dais of its first year, “When the Centre opened in November 2004 we faced some challenges but since then we have worked hard to bring our cultural vision alive; we have created new audiences for ballet and other artforms, nurtured Welsh culture and talent, attracted audiences from the rest of Wales and the UK, and succeeded in introducing people to a wide range of programming from musicals to contemporary dance.”

Among the successes which Isherwood highlighted are:

  • 98% of first time visitors to the Centre intend to visit again in the near future
  • 320,000 people have attended more than 250 performances in the Donald Gordon theatre
  • Over 6,000 schoolchildren have visited the Centre
  • Over 500 free foyer performances per year for casual visitors to the Centre
  • Over 24,500 people attended 20 performances by the Kirov and Australian Ballet companies
  • Over 16,000 business users have taken part in 500 conferences and events
