Brigid Lar,our

New Director at Watford

Watford Palace Theatre has announced that its new Artistic Director will be Brigid Larmour.

Brigid was the founding Artistic Director of Act Productions, from its beginnings in 1998 as a solo operation within a large theatre owning group to its current position as one of the West End's leading independent producers. During that period Brigid developed and produced a wide range of work, from Lee Hall's Spoonface Steinberg, with Kathryn Hunter, directed by Annie Castledine and Marcello Magni, to Osborne and Creighton's Epitaph For George Dillon, directed by Peter Gill, with Joseph Fiennes, Francesca Annis and Anne Reid, to Kevin Elyot's adaptation of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, directed by Steven Pimlott, with Tara Fitzgerald, Richard Johnson, Gemma Jones and Graham Crowden. She set up productions in partnership with many subsidised companies including Sheffield Theatres, Nottingham Playhouse, the Gate Dublin (John Hurt in Krapp's Last Tape and Ian Holm in The Homecoming) and the NT (Jeremy Sams' revival of Noises Off), as well as with commercial colleagues in London and New York.

Her previous career as a director in the subsidised sector focussed primarily on new work and Shakespeare. From 1994-7, Brigid developed and directed a series of interactive promenade productions for NT Education - Shakespeare Unplugged. From 1988-94 she was Artistic Director of Contact Theatre, Manchester, turning it around from artistic and financial crisis, partly through programming new work which brought in a younger audience. As Associate at Contact from 1985-7, she worked closely with Charlotte Keatley on developing her groundbreaking play My Mother Said I Never Should, and directing its successful premiere. She trained at the RSC, as Assistant Director to Terry Hands.

Brigid said, "I am delighted to take on the Artistic Directorship of Watford Palace Theatre. Lawrence Till leaves behind him a stunningly restored Edwardian theatre and a terrific in-house team. The Palace has a highly respected Education department, and a thriving and diverse local community. It is well supported by Arts Council England East, Watford Borough Council, and Hertfordshire County Council, and has both a regional and a national role to play. I am very excited about the future."

WPT's Chair Peter McInerney said, "The appointment of Brigid Larmour marks the start of an exciting new era for Watford Palace Theatre. Her enthusiasm and vision for WPT is truly inspiring and I am convinced that Brigid will lead the theatre on an exhilarating artistic journey."

Brigid will be taking up her role from 21st August.
