Young People Hold Court at the Palace

Back in April, Watford Palace Theatre joined forces with the Royal Court Theatre to run a playwriting course with six local young writers. The young people first took part in a week long workshop at the Palace with the Royal Court's Ola Animashawun and playwright Jane Bodie, where they began preparing their ideas and discussing the technicalities of play writing. Over the next two months they worked on their scripts and attended regular mentoring sessions with WPT's Kirstie Davis, Ian Wainwright, Katy Silverton and Joyce Branagh.

The project will culminate in a showcase of the short plays and excerpts at Watford Palace Theatre on Friday 22nd July, which will be performed by professional actors who will rehearse for a week with the writers and directors.

The young people taking part are Elizabeth Bauer from St Albans, Dale Carpenter and Helena Guerreiro from Bushey, Melanie Howe from Rickmansworth, Ash Leyton from Hertford and Fiona Warren from Watford.

Watford Palace Associate Director (Active) Kirstie Davis said, "Working with the Royal Court on this project has been a fantastic experience for all of us. The support and advice given to the young writers has been invaluable and they have progressed immensely over the past few months. Watford Palace Theatre is committed to supporting new talent, and hopefully these young people will continue with their writing and maybe even pursue a career in that field."

Tickets for the showcase performance on 22 July, priced at £6, are available from the Box Office on 01923 225671.
