Dateline: 16th September, 2005
A country prepares for war. A twenty four hour round-the-clock arms race. Troops mass on the border. Just the moment for a ghost to tell you that your father was murdered by the guy in charge your uncle. Thatll put a spoke in the wheel of the war machine. Anyway, its your own fault for being the layabout thirty year-old heir to the throne and messing around with the fourteen year-old daughter of the Prime Minister. Itll all end in tears. And a conquering army. That's how the Wales Theatre Company advertises its next production, Hamlet, which will tour theatres in Wales, beginning at the Grand Theatre, Swansea on Wednesday 19th October, with a Gala Welsh language performance on 21 October, and playing there until Saturday 29th October. Then it moves to Cardiffs New Theatre (2nd -12th November); The Torch, Milford Haven (14th 16th November, Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon (17th 19th November) and the North Wales Theatre, Llandudno (21st 24th) November. The production is being rehearsed and presented in Welsh and English. The new Welsh translation, by Gareth Miles, was commissioned by the Arts Council of Wales (ACW). Michael Bogdanov directs and the cast of twenty will be led by Wayne Cater as Hamlet. It will be the company's sixth production: its previous productions were Under Milk Wood, Twelfth Night, Cymbeline, The Merchant of Venice and Mal Popes musical Amazing Grace. Bogdanov has directed Hamlet three times before, at the Old Vic, the Deutches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and the Abbey, Dublin. Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
