Leeds Launches New Ticket Schemes Leeds' West Yorkshire Playhouse has launched two new schemes to benefit regular attenders at the theatre. Playhouse Advance is aimed at those who like to book in advance. A limited number of these tickets priced from £10 will be available for many shows this season. Theatre goers are urged to be 'quick off the mark' to secure these tickets. The Playhouse has also more than doubled its concession rate. All tickets booked by Concessionary ticket holders will receive £5 off ticket prices. Then there is the new MyPlayhouse membership scheme. Over 5500 people are regular attenders at West Yorkshire Playhouse and the scheme is tailored especially for their needs. For a flat annual fee of £20 (£15 if purchased before the end of September), those who would like a closer involvement with the Playhouse and its productions can benefit from:
Audiences can visit www.wyp.org.uk or call the Box Office on 0113 213 7700 for more information on all ticket deals and to reserve tickets for forthcoming shows. There are also two new events added to the already announced programme (see our news story of 6th July) and a new tour. Opera North returns with Mercy and Grand: The Tom Waits Project (25, 26 October), bringing together ten songs by Tom Waits, a handful of numbers by Kurt Weill, a sea shanty, a hymn, a couple of instrumental gypsy tangos and a classical Fellini film score, all played by an incredibly versatile 'circus band' ensemble. The music has been arranged by bass player Gavin Briars, pianist James Holmes and violinist Joe Townsend. The ensemble is completed by James Woodrow (guitar), Dai Pritchard (clarinet), Simon Allen (percussion) and Mark Boise (accordion) and the singer is mezzo-soprano Jess Walker. This is a concert that evokes the heart of Tom Waits' music and places it in the contexts of the great European and American song writing traditions. Also an Opera North event is America Over the Water With Shirley Collins (11 October). This talk features folk icon Shirley Collins who will recount her travels across the southern states of America with legendary song archivist Alan Lomax through story, photographs and archive recordings, some of which were later used by the Coen Brothers in their film O Bother Where Arts Thou?. Finally, Full of Noises is the latest show to be presented by West Yorkshire Playhouse Touring Company. Directed by Daniel Bye, Full of Noises is an interpretation of Shakespeare's The Tempest which will visit Secondary schools across Leeds from September. Exploring the play's themes of authority, leadership and friendship, the production will use live music, storytelling and puppetry through the use of objects to make Shakespeare's words accessible to a young audience.
Please note that all three Archive indices are very long and will therefore take some time to download.
