William Nicholson

Nicholson to Judge Leeds Competition

Oscar nominated playwright, screenwriter and novelist William Nicholson will be the lead judge in a playwriting competition run by West Yorkshire Playhouse, to celebrate the world premiere of his new play Crash which opens on 16th October and addresses the ethical questions around the credit crunch, bankers’ bonuses and society’s unhealthy obsession with wealth. The Playhouse is inviting budding writers from across Yorkshire to write a five minute script for no more than two actors, inspired by a current news story.

The plays will be read by Nicholson who will select the five best scripts from all entries. Professional director Chris Hill will work on the scripts with the finalists and two professional actors. The winning scripts will then be filmed by Kaptur bespoke film and photography, and placed on the Playhouses website during the run of the play.

Nicholson was nominated for Oscars for his screenplay Shadowlands and his work on Gladiator. Shadowlands was first produced as a play and won the Evening Standard drama award for best play in 1990. After a long West End run, the play transferred to Broadway where William won a Tony award nomination for best play.

Scripts should be sent to Alex Chisholm, Associate Director, Literary at West Yorkshire Playhouse by email to alex.chisholm@wyp.org.uk or by post to West Yorkshire Playhouse, Quarry Hill, Playhouse Aquare, Leeds LS2 7UP to arrive by noon on Monday 18th October. The winners will be announced on 21st October.

There are full details on the West Yorkshire Playhouse website.
