York Theatre Royal Wins Tourism Awards

Two of the highlights of the year at York Theatre Royal were recognised last night at the York Tourism Awards ceremony at the York Racecourse.

Sponsored by over twenty of York's businesses, the Awards were handed out to sixteen winners by the BBC's Look North presenter Harry Gration. Over one hundred and fifty entries were received for the Awards this year.

The Theatre Royal's first win was for the 'Visit York Visitor Experience of the Year' which was awarded to its production of The Railway Children, staged at the National Railway Museum, which was seen by over 24,000 visitors. It is to be revived this year.

The second win of the evening was awarded to Berwick Kaler and the York Theatre Royal Pantomime for 'Visit York Ambassador of the Year'.

Dick Turpin broke records for audience attendance and received acclaim from both local and national press. Last year marked Kaler's 30th year as the panto dame and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London honoured this special event by recording a performance for its national archive.

Of winning the award he said, "York is the best place on earth to visit and the best place on the planet to live. I'd like to thank the people of York for supporting the pantomime for thirty years. I've enjoyed every minute and am over the moon to have won the York Ambassador award. See you in December for Humpty Dumpty!"
