The Youn Vic

Halfway There - and Half a Million Richer

At a topping out ceremony on Wednesday to celebrate the halfway stage of the redevelopment of the Young Vic, its artistic director David Lan announced that the theatre has received a grant of £500,000 from the London Development Agency, leaving just £600,000 of the £12.m to find.

The theatre, built in 1970, had a life expectancy of five years but has been in use continually for almost 35 years. The fund-raising campaign includes a request for donations - so far the list of those who have donated - companies, famous theatrical names and ordinary people - runs to two pages of their website. They are also inviting people to "Take a Seat": for £16.66 a month, paid over five years by Direct Debit, donors can name one of the seats in the new auditorium. So far over 130 seats have been "sold".

The rebuilt theatre, increased in capacity to 600, is due to re-open in September 2006.
