Punchs mad desire for Pretty Polly drives him to a succession
of ritual killings.
Birtwistles first opera, premiered at Aldeburgh in 1968, unleashes
the dark forces behind the sea-side Punch. A landmark in British music,
in this its 40th anniversary year, it is conducted by ENO music director
Edward Gardner and directed by Daniel Kramer.
