New Abbey Director Appointed Dublin's Abbey Theatre has appointed a new director, the successor to artistic director Ben Barnes, who leaves at the end of the year. He is Fiach MacConghail who is currently a policy adviser to the Irish culture minister. The historic theatre is in financial trouble at the moment, with a rumoured deficit of around £2m and the possibility of large-scale redundancies, and the Arts Council has made a rescue package of €2m conditional on major changes in working practices. MacConghail has been appointed as "director" with both management and artistic responsibilities. He begins his work at the theatre in May and, as director-designate, will work in collaboration with Ben Barnes and managing director brian Jackson for the rest of the year.
