Academy Drama School Closes

The Academy Drama School in London's Whitechapel Road has gone bankrupt, leaving many of the 63 students on its two year evening course who had paid in advance with nowhere to go. One student told The Stage that they had been called to a meeting on the last day of the autumn term to be told that the school was to close and no money would be returned.

Fees at the 22 year old school range from £200 for a week long audition cource to £1,400 per term for a six term full time evening course. Its selling point was providing acting training on an evenings-only basis to allown those who could not get grants to work during the day to pay for the course.

Its website says:

The Academy Drama School was founded in 1985 by Tim and Judith Reynolds. With years of experience in the performing arts, they saw a gap in drama training; a course which would provide full and professional instruction for those with the desire and talent, but not the money or local authority grant to pay for it. A unique course was founded and the college opened with The Full Time Evening Course - for many students the only possibility; working during the day to support themselves and training in the evening. It is a hard approach to a hard profession, but one that provides a real oppertunity (sic) for those who are desperate to learn, but do not otherwise have the finances.

Judith Reynolds told the newspaper that the reason for the failure was unpaid fees (£67,000) and their failure to increase fees enough over the years. "We looked at it in November," she said, "and realised we probably couldn’t get through January’s term, so we couldn’t take people’s money for it. There was nothing I could do to stop the school going."
