Dateline: 1st February, 2008 ACE Funding - Successful Appeals Seventeen arts organisations, including eight theatre companies and one opera company, have successfully appealed against Arts Council England's proposed cuts. Succesful appeals were made by:
This means that a total of 185 organisations will not have their funding renewed and 27 organisations will have their funding reduced. Of Jacksons Lane, the Arts Council said, "The quality of Jacksons Lanes artistic and community programme was never in doubt. Our proposal was based on long-held concerns about the capital investment needed to make the Jacksons Lane building fit for purpose as a resource for artists and audiences, and doubts that the landlord, the London Borough of Haringey, was committed to the necessary on-going level of investment. While these concerns remain, responses received from Jacksons Lane and LB Haringey have led us to review our proposal and to offer the opportunity for both organisations to demonstrate that a sustainable future for Jacksons Lane is possible. We have therefore agreed to provide funding for one year, to March 2009, following which our support for Jacksons Lane will be reviewed." Commenting on the Bush, it said, "We are fully committed to support for The Bush Theatre, and will retain the company on its existing annual grant of £490,748 with year on year inflationary uplifts for the next three years. Having worked closely with The Bush throughout the response period, it is clear that, while we considered that our funding would support The Bush as a venue for new plays, it should also take account of The Bush's full programme of development for playwrights and audiences. Our understanding of this has been clarified through discussions and correspondence with The Bush over the past five weeks. "Our concerns about the issues that The Bush faces in its current building are not new, and looking at all the options for an appropriate future home is a shared priority. This does not necessarily mean that The Bush will need to move - the full potential of how the current building might be developed is being explored. But whatever its future home, we are clear that the character and artistic vision of the organisation, and a location within the vicinity of Shepherds Bush, will be retained. We are committed to working with The Bush to address these concerns." Of the Orange Tree, ACE said, "The quality of the Orange Trees artistic and education programmes was never in doubt. Our proposal to reduce funding was predicated on a strategic decision to prioritise other outer London boroughs, where audiences are less well served in terms of high quality theatre. On discussion of the organisations response, we are now clear that the proposed reduction of 12.5%, although modest, would nevertheless have a significantly negative impact on the Orange Trees ability to offer high quality theatre experiences to audiences in Richmond and from across London. We are therefore pleased to confirm that we will retain the Orange Tree Theatre on its existing annual grant of £361,828 with year on year inflationary uplifts for the next three years." Regarding the Northcott, ACE announced, "Today, the Arts Council confirms its original offer of almost £550,000 for 2008/09. In addition, similar amounts have been reserved for the two subsequent years if the Northcott can demonstrate that improvements have been made. "The two years extra funding will be subject to a review which the Arts Council wishes to undertake with the Northcott and its other funding stakeholders." Of Eastern Angles, ACE said, "We have taken into account the need to address touring theatre across the region, and we will be working with them on a range of new opportunities to do this over the next three years."
