Alice in Wonderland

The Dukes’ Theatre’s popular Play in the Park returns to Lancaster next year with a brand-new production of Alice in Wonderland.

The performances have had a ‘year off’ in 2019, during which time the venue has been fundraising for new technical equipment to secure the future of the event—raising more than £59,000 so far.

For the first time, in 2020, there will be a full week of preview performances, giving more people the opportunity to enjoy the promenade production, performed at several locations around picturesque Williamson Park. Since beginning in 1987, more than half a million theatregoers have seen the productions, making it the biggest such ‘walkabout season’ in the country.

Alice in Wonderland will be performed from July 7 to August 22 and will be written and directed by the venue’s former artistic director, Sarah Punshon, joined by composers Claire Tustin and Ziad Jabero, with whom she previously collaborated on the Dukes’ Christmas production of Peter Pan.

The venue’s 2016 production of The Hobbit won the UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and Young People, as well as selling out during its final weeks.
