Newcastle-based early career dance company Fertile Ground has appointed two Artistic Directors to replace founding AD Dora Frankel. They are Malgorzata Dzierzon and Renaud Wiser. Both are members of New Movement Collective, a London based Associate Company to Rambert Dance, and have worked nationally and internationally.

Malgorzata Dzierzon is a former dancer, choreographer, teacher and producer, a Clore Fellow and former Co-Director New Movement Collective and has taught in some of the most prestigious dance schools in the UK including RADA, National Ballet and Rambert. In 2016 she worked with Fertile Ground creating Eight Steps, part of Dancing the Road, a work investigating navigating the public space.

“I am thrilled to be part of the future of Fertile Ground,” she said. “I have long been an admirer of Dora and the work she has done. I look forward to widening the international and national links and being part of the North East Dance ecology.”

Renaud Wiser is a member of New Movement Collective and Artistic Director of his own company. He was movement director on a number of theatre productions, including Othello at the Tobacco Factory and Ditch at the High Tide Festival. He has taught at Laban, CAT (Dance City) and The Place.

“Fertile Ground represents something we are both passionate about,” Wiser added. “Supporting young and emerging dance artists and making work that excites audiences. We look forward to creating performances in unusual spaces and continuing the great work that has already been started.”

Dora Frankel has said she is delighted with the appointments.

“We had a fantastic response to the advertisement for the post,” she said. “It’s wonderful to have not one but two highly accomplished artists who have the skills, the knowledge and the passion to take the company forward.”
