The Almeida Theatre in Islington was the venue that came out of Sunday's Olivier Awards with the most trophies with a total of eight wins for its West End transfers of Chimerica and Ghosts.
Lucy Kirkwood's Chimerica came out top of the plays with five wins for Best New Play, Best Director for Lyndsey Turner, Best Lighting Design for Tim Lutkin and Finn Ross, Best Sound Design for Carolyn Downing and Best Set Design for Es Devlin.
Top of the musicals was Book of Mormon with four wins for Best New Musical, Best Actor in a Musical for Gavin Creel, Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Stephen Ashfield and Best Theatre Choreographer for Casey Nicholaw.
The principle acting awards went to Rory Kinnear for his Iago in Othello at the National Theatre and Lesley Manville for Mrs Alving in Ghosts at the Almeida Theatre and Trafalgar Studios, with supporting actor awards going to Jack Lowden, also in the Almeida's, Ghosts, and Sharon D Clarke for The Amen Corner at the National Theatre.
Best opera and dance productions were Les Vêpres Siciliennes at the Royal Opera House and Eastman—Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Sadler’s Wells for Puz/zle at Sadler’s Wells, with outstanding achievement awards in each of those genres going to English Touring Opera for "its brave and challenging touring productions" at the Linbury Studio Theatre, Royal Opera House and Michael Hulls for his body of lighting work including Ballet Boyz—The Talent at Sadler’s Wells.
Special awards went to theatre impresario Michael White and to the National Theatre's outgoing team of Nicholas Hytner and Nick Starr.
The BBC Radio 2 Audience Award, voted for by the public, went to Les Misérables for the second time.
