Dateline: 7th September, 2003 Coming to the Almeida ANTHONY PAGE DIRECTS THE BRITISH PREMIERE OF EDWARD ALBEE'S THE GOAT OR , WHO IS SYLVIA? Anthony Page will direct the British première of Edward Albee's The Goat or, Who is Sylvia? which will have its first performance on 22nd January 2004 with press night on 3rd February and runs until 13th March. Designs are by Hildegard Bechtler. In the same week as receiving an international prize, being awarded a lucrative contract, and celebrating his 50th birthday, Martin is forced to confess to his wife and son that he is involved in a relationship that will probably destroy his marriage, his career, and his life. The Goat or, Who is Sylvia?, which had its world première on Broadway in 2002, was awarded the Tony Award for Best Play as well as New York Critics' Circle, Outer Critics' Circle and the Drama Desk Awards. RUFUS NORRIS DIRECTS DAVID ELDRIDGE'S NEW ADAPTATION OF FESTEN Rufus Norris will direct the World Première of David Eldridge's new English Language adaptation of Festen (The Celebration). This new stage adaptation of the original Dogme film will open on 18th March, with press night 25th March, and runs until 24th April. Set Designs are by Ian MacNeil, sound by Paul Arditti and music by Orlando Gough. Patriarch Helge Klingenfelt is celebrating his 60th birthday with his family at a magnificent old hotel in the Danish countryside. Gathered together are his loyal wife Elsa, his daughter Helene, and sons Christian and Michael. As the evening progresses Christian feels compelled to break the silence surrounding a dark family secret. The effect is explosive and sets the tone for a celebration no-one will forget. In 1997 Thomas Vinterberg, who initiated the Dogme95 movement alongside fellow director Lars von Trier, directed Festen. The multi-award winning feature film written by Vinterberg and Mogens Rukov was received with great critical acclaim internationally. The Almeida's production of Festen is presented in association with Producer Marla Rubin. MICHAEL ATTENBOROUGH DIRECTS SINEAD CUSACK AND JOHN HANNAH IN THE MERCY SEAT The Almeida continues its creative association with Neil LaBute by presenting the British premiere of his latest play, The Mercy Seat. Directed by Michael Attenborough, The Mercy Seat opens on 23rd October with press night on 30th October and runs until 6th December. Designs are by Robert Jones, lighting is by Mark Henderson and sound is by John Leonard. 12th September 2001, New York City: while the dust is still settling, Ben and Abby can choose to see what has happened as a tragedy, a catastrophe or an opportunity. This is their chance to disappear, to be dead to the world, to start a new life. Sinead Cusack will play Abby and John Hannah Ben. Michael Attenborough is Artistic Director of the Almeida Theatre Company. Following The Mercy Seat, he will direct Joanna Lauren's new play, Five Gold Rings (11th December - 17th January).
