Stockard Channing
News from the Almeida

Michael Attenborough, the Almeida’s Artistic Director, will direct Stockard Channing in Clifford Odets’ Awake and Sing! which will run at the Almeida from 6th September to 20th October (previews from 31st August). Further casting will be announced shortly.

Awake and Sing! tells the story of the Bergers, a lowermiddle-class, three-generation Jewish family living in a Bronx apartment during the1930s. The family, ruled over by strong-willed matriarch Bessie, played by Channing, long for a better world for themselves. True to life in his depiction of the extreme economic hardships confronted by working-class immigrant families during the 1930s, Odets documents their travails and their hopes, capturing the frenetic, pressured existence in this crowded home.

In December, Will Tuckett will direct Marianne Dreams, the Almeida’s first production specifically for families. First published in 1958 and reprinted many times, Marianne Dreams is a children’s classic. Moira Buffini’s adaptation of Catherine Storr’s classic novel will run at the Almeida from 19th December, 2007 (previews from 13th), to 19th January, 2008. Designs are by Anthony Ward, with lighting by Neil Austin.

On her tenth birthday Marianne runs a fever and to her horror she’s soon confined to bed. She picks up a pencil and starts to draw to fill her time. That night Marianne dreams. Transported into her own picture she discovers she has the power to change her dreams. As she draws by day and dreams by night, Marianne soon realises the consequences of her actions and finds that she’s not alone – a sick boy called Mark exists not only in her dreams but also in her waking reality.

Marianne Dreams is recommended for children of 7 years and above.
