Newcastle’s Alphabetti Theatre has been shortlisted for Fringe Theatre of the Year in The Stage Awards 2020, it was announced today.

Located on St James Boulevard, Alphabetti is Newcastle’s newest and smallest producing theatre, housing a flexible 75-seater or 150 standing performance space, a café / bar (open 5:00–11:00 Tuesday to Thursday and 5:00 to midnight Friday and Saturday), a bookshop, a rehearsal space, a prop and costume workshop / store and artist studios.

The theatre receives the occasional Grant for the Arts from the Arts Council and other charitable organisations but the majority of its income comes from the bar, especially since in order the make theatre as affordable as possible to as many people as possible, the majority of its productions are Pay What You Feel.

The other two shortlisted venues are London-based: the Bunker Theatre in London Bridge, housed in a former underground parking garage, and The Orange Tree in Richmond.

The winners of all nine awards will be announced on 31 January 2020 at a ceremony at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
