Andy Arnold

Arnold Moves to the Tron

Andy Arnold will be leaving the Arches in April to take up the post of Director of the Tron Theatre, both Glasgow theatres announced today.

Arnold established the Arches in 1991 and has held the position of Artistic Director ever since. Almost seventeen years ago Arnold was handed the keys to the then derelict series of railway arches, with the aim of producing theatre in one of the spaces there. In order to find a means to finance the project, large scale weekly night clubs were started. The venue has since grown to be one of the UK’s leading arts centres, with a dynamic programme of theatre, concerts, and other arts events and a reputation as one of the best night clubs in the world.

Throughout this period Arnold has focused on directing a range of theatre shows in various spaces around the building - most recently work by James Kelman and Samuel Beckett in the Studio Theatre, and a huge promenade production of Dante’s Inferno alongside Spend A Penny staged in toilet cubicles. Arnold has always maintained a strong policy of support for new work, providing opportunities for emerging talent. Last year Arches Theatre and the Tron Theatre received Foundation Funding status from the Scottish Arts Council in recognition of their key roles in Scottish Theatre. He will be moving to the Tron to take on the artistic leadership as well as becoming the organisation’s chief executive.

On the appointment Andy Arnold said, "It has been an unbelievable experience setting up and running the Arches. I have enjoyed every minute of it and I am so proud of everyone who works there and of what we have all achieved together.

"The Arches plays a unique role in the arts in Scotland and is in a very strong position right now. We have always focused on giving opportunities to young artistic talent – directors, writers, actors, musicians – and it is my hope that some of the best young talent we have nurtured will now come through and take on the venue’s creative leadership.

"At the same time, I am very excited about this move to the Tron. This will be a completely new challenge for me and I can’t wait to get started. The Tron is firmly established as a leading theatre in Scotland and I believe there is a tremendous opportunity for taking things further. As a theatre director I believe there is no better city than Glasgow to be working in and I want to develop a range of strong drama to present to Glasgow audiences – particularly through the Tron Theatre Company. It will be my aim over the next few years to turn the Tron into a creative powerhouse in Scottish theatre."

Tron Theatre Chairman Peter Lawson said, "I am delighted that Andy has agreed to take up the position. In recent years the Tron has produced some of the best and most innovative theatre in Scotland, and I am confident that this appointment will enable us to continue to deliver an eclectic and dynamic programme of work."

The Arches Chairman Lesley Thomson added, "On behalf of the Board and everyone at The Arches we would like to wish Andy every success for the future. It has been a privilege to work with Andy and to see The Arches become one of Europe’s leading arts venues. It is a credit to Andy that he leaves a great team across all aspects of The Arches who will continue to build on its reputation and bring exciting, ground-breaking work to audiences of all ages."
